Satirical Rube Goldberg Machine
During the beginning stages of this project, we first focused on learning about satirical devices. A few of these devices were used in my final satire which consisted of irony and hyperbole. Then after covering the basics we read and saw what good satire was. We then were challenged to incorporate satire into a rube Goldberg machine.
My Satire:
Dear Editor,
I am writing to you because I have a modest proposal. In fact, this proposal will bring extravagant solutions to problems that have been sought for the past decades.
The other day, as I walked through the street my legs grew numb, and after searching endlessly for an entire block I finally found a trash can. My legs were exhausted and I was very frustrated. Though I had a marvelous idea, which was to enforce a treaty to place trash cans every ten feet on every public road. This solution will help in two ways. First off there will be a huge decrease in littering. The second reason which is far superior is that this treaty will help people like myself that have trouble walking far distances. Meaning walking to the nearest trash can will be a lot easier.
My next idea is a solid solution for combating deforestation. Personally, I eat a lot of artificial things, for example, artificial sugar. This made me think that since artificial sugar tastes normal, why wouldn’t artificial trees be the same as well? My idea was to rapidly plant or make artificial trees. This way there wouldn't be as much deforestation. On top of that, there would be no leaves to deal with in the fall. The summer would bring fewer fires and most importantly there wouldn’t be any plants to water. This solution would bring equity to all as there would be fewer responsibilities and little to no yard work duties.
The next issue I had an idea for was pollution. Growing up I was surrounded by factories and farms. So it’s easy to say that I grew up in a very polluted place. Which I didn’t mind, the pollution was a perfect excuse to not go outside which I dread very much. You know the saying “if you can’t beat them join em.” Well, my idea was just to rapidly increase pollution as there’s no coming back from it. This idea is perfect because currently we are forced to wear masks every day. So in the future when the earth is more polluted it won’t be an issue because we can just wear masks. Another plus from this idea is the economy and how much the economy would benefit. With no laws to combat pollution, the economy would thrive.
I believe with all my heart that these changes would make a huge difference and could definitely help with fixing these problems. These ideas could be seen as the greatest ideas the human race has ever had. Thus proving that we must put these into action in order to save the world.
Sincerely,
Sage Robbins

Project Reflection:
My satire is a letter to the editor. I wanted to create a funny and exaggerated proposal of ideas that could be possible solutions for problems such as pollution and deforestation. I thought it would be perfect to make a letter to the editor as they are short but very concise. Meaning I could be very dense within the words I wrote but also make my piece very meaningful. The target of my satire is the decisions humans have made in the past that have affected our environment, and the world as a whole. My overall message is showing that humans and the decisions we make could be perceived as the most harmful thing towards our world. In other words, due to human decisions, our ecosystem and planet have become spoiled through time. Meaning that because of human behavior our earth has plummeted into a downward spiral. The first device I used in my satire was hyperbole. I chose hyperbole because I wanted to exaggerate the ideas within my satire and make the ideas look ridiculous. The impact I wanted the hyperbole to have was simple. I just wanted the readers to see the pure ridiculous exaggeration. I wanted my satire to be serious yet also goofy in a sense. This way I made my satire impactful but still engaging and intriguing. The second satirical device I used was sarcasm. I chose sarcasm because I wanted to make fun of the target and this was a perfect way. I used sarcasm by highlighting certain points of my satire in order to mock my target. For example, in the trash can example. I used sarcasm by being bitter towards the target. Which came solely from using harsh words within the writing. The impact I wanted the sarcasm to have was mainly just to make fun of the target and show just how ridiculous ideas have been in the past and present.
Throughout this course, we have learned a lot but the most interesting thing we learned in my books was the satirical devices. This section of our data collection was fun and I actually felt challenged as I was learning new things that were confusing. So for that very reason, I thought learning about satirical devices was very important. All of the devices serve different roles in making satire. I think the sheer importance of satire comes from each of these devices. Meaning satire can be different if you change any device for another. This is very important because it shows that satire is made up of these devices. My final project is a satire of course, so luckily since satire is built up of satirical devices. It is very easy to see these devices within my final satire. I used two main devices: sarcasm and hyperbole. Though there are occurrences of other devices within my work. In the end, these devices are the supports for satire and personally, I enjoyed learning about these devices the most out of anything because they are very intriguing.
Paragraph 3: Satire
The role of satire in society, in my opinion, is to educate an audience about a problem In a harsh and ridicule way or a funny and sarcastic way. Beyond being educated about a problem, satire brings a message and with a clear target, it’s easy to see any argument. Therefore, satire’s role in society is simple, satire brings many opinions and messages that are important, whilst still being funny, goofy, sarcastic, or harsh. In order to have a good piece of satire, there needs to be a clear sense of satirical devices. It doesn't matter if there are 1, 2, or many satirical devices, but they need to be highlighted and well done in order to have a good satire. I would say that humor, silliness, and ridiculousness also all have a role in making satire more engaging which makes satire more effective. Something that would make any satire less effective is definitely being unclear as to what the target is and what satirical devices should be used. Therefore, if a satire has a clear sense of satirical devices and is engaging then that satire is effective. Whereas, if you have a piece of satire that is boring, or does not show any satirical devices, you’ll have a less effective piece of satire. The first satire we read was about cannibalism. It was named A Modest Proposal. This satire was effective because it was very ridiculous, serious, but also mind-wrapping. The satire itself was very engaging to read because it was ridiculed. Though the satire was most effective due to the strong usage of the satirical devices.
Grading myself has always been tricky for me. Though this year I would say I fall under the 9 category. I would say that I am a very engaging student that tries to do work. Though sometimes I am a little unprepared for class. For example, this year I haven't gone school shopping so without a doubt I dont have some of the necessities I need each day. However, I would say the positives outweigh the negatives. I like to think that I do a good job listening, and in fact, know that I use class time efficiently most days. Though some days I goof off a bit, so that's why I'm in this category. Personally for me learning needs to be super engaging so I always try and put myself into the conversation because that's how I learn better. In the last bit of the semester, I plan to try and be more prepared for class. I first must go school shopping for everything but most importantly pencils. Then I will work on bringing the necessities I need each and every day. One more plan I hope to make it to work more efficiently each day, especially during the days when we're in person.

Imperialism Project
This project as students we picked rebellion movements in Africa during imperialism. We then researched our movements and learned about what they did and how they affected colonization. After researching we then moved into the project phase. We made Opinion Editorials about our rebellions as well as either a visual art piece or political cartoon that related to our Op-Ed.
